<em>Road</em> Rules :: Hollywood Elsewhere

 <modified>2008-11-23T12:21+00:00

was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign.
had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the
-ian visual style the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone one question has fortunately been answered:
In serious artistic-cred terms (as opposed to counting hands in a high-school popularity poll) the Best Picture race has been radically altered by the arrival of. It is the new King Shit among the '08 power-punchers -- films that reflect some aspect of the real grit out there and say "this could be about you." As I it's "the strongest heavyweight drama I've seen all year so far.. a corrosive and heartbreaking masterwork."
As I also yesterday. "A Best Picture winner has to be a manifestation of someone's idea of a great drop-dead grand-or-penetrating-theme art film or it has to get people emotionally in a big way. Sorry but them's the rules."
obviously treds familiar ground (the old suburbia-sucks let-me-outta-here mantra) but without question it's a manifestation of the latter.
The only other film that truly towers over the rest is the film that very few of the elite critics will stand behind because (a) they have eyes but will not see or (b) they lack the cojones to stand up to the conventional wisdom that a film has to be at least semi-commercial to be Oscar-worthy -- Steven Soderbergh's
Re-order your thinking on this concept lest you imperil your immortal souls. Choose your heroes and champions based on the criteria of the Movie Gods not the likes and dislikes of the oafs and serfs who pay to see movies down at the mall... good heavens.
Soderbergh's lack of interest in even beginning to attempt to "entertain" the popcorn-munchers is not a plus sign in and of itself but critics and smart industry viewers should at least be able to see what's going on here and at least give credit where due.
is the pure and even made majestic the telling of a two-act story that could only have been lessened by being shaped into "drama." It is naturalism in the rough unpretentious verite magnificence poetry in the details an
hang-out-with-a-legendary-figure presented as a form of truth both literal and eternal. And yet it is so stand-alone "out there" that you can't really call it drama.
a rouser that is obviously getting people emotionally. A fevered and sweeping Dickens tale but in the view of some a bit too manipulative and willfully "extreme" to register alongside the cinematic distinctions of
which is exquisite and immaculate on its own stage-play-transferred-into-cinematic-tension terms but isn't quite as jolting or emotionally affecting or profound even as (no offense to John Patrick Shanley. Meryl Streep. Roger Deakins. Philip Seymour Hoffman and everyone else involved)
is a tight well-written and admirably assembled drama that delivers a metaphor about the tendency of truth to hide its face until all other options and avenues have been exhausted. But it is primarily a performance film by the expert technique and sadness of Frank Langella's Richard Nixon. It's not the stunner and soul-shaker that
is brilliant but it is the winner of the Best Animated Feature Oscar -- it needs to stay on its own side of the Rio Grande. And if they gave an Oscar to the Best Tweener Drama of the Year. Rod Lurie's
I think Slumdog will win best picture... Hollywood has been rewarding filmmakers and actors outside the mainstream lately-- Diablo Cody for Juno last year and Jennifer Hudson for Dreamgirls the year before-- as a nod towards new media as alternative avenues for content (Cody representing blogs and the internet and Hudson representing reality TV and American Idol). If Slumdog is the reigning success promised by the critics the "Hollywood film" may become just another genre under the umbrella that is world cinema. "Foreign films" as a category may go the way of "Best Original Story" and be retired (making room for "Best Comedy"?).
The alternative is that Hollywood could give the award to Milk to send a message to the California electorate who passed an anti-marriage proposition that seems to be going backwards in terms of the culture.
Jeff- You do have to be admired for your advocacy. "The Visitor" and "Nothing but the Truth" are both fantastic films and both beautifully acted. In fact. I think both are better than "Revolutionary Road," at least in terms of how both have remained in my brain after seeing them. In fact. "Truth" has the best and most turn-on-its-head ending of any film in a very long time. The film is worth it for the last four lines of dialogue alone. Some may not get it- but those are people who have their brains on autodrive.
As many times as you insist this divide exists. I will insist it doesn't. A movie is a movie is a movie from Melies to Griffith to Disney to Fellini to Kazan to Miyazaki to Kubrick. There is no good reason to ghettoize whole segments of the cinema.
Also is there anything else you could add about the strength of his performance? I'm particularly interested. And I appreciate what you have shared so far. As a huge fan of his performance in The Departed. I'm happy to read what you said in a previous comment.
Leo has to be a solid bet - this is the performance of his career so far. Ditto Kate Winslet. Will not be surprised if both win. But Mickey Rourke.. tough to beat him. He's taking it. Kate Winslet will probably win. She's magnificent. Michael Shannon will give Heath a run for his money. Che is going to freak out the Academy. It will seem like a self-indulgent masturbatory exercise in futility.
SlumdogFrost/NixonRevolutionary RoadBenjamin ButtonThe Dark KnightDoubtMilk
It will probably be some variation of those above. Winslet could win Actress (up against Meryl Streep). Rourke could win Actor (Langella his main competition). Picture is still up in the air - could be Benjamin Button could be Revolutionary Road.
It's hilarious how Jeff is unable to see the hypocrisy of condemning critics for lacking backbone whileat the same time demanding that they bend to hisbullying tactics over his favored films.
Last year. Zodiac. This year. Che and now RevolutionaryRoad. Anyone who dares disagree with Jeff's obsessions must submit to his ridicule and brow-beating.
Revolutionary Road may play very well to an older Academy crowd but personally I was disappointed. It was very good and the performances were all excellent but it was missing something. I thought American Beauty was better but there are plenty who feel that film hasn't aged all that great. I'm not one of them. DiCaprio and Winslet are fantastic but personally I was more riveted by the Streep-Hoffman and Langella-Sheen duos. I don't think it's one of Leo's more memorable characters and I thought he was actually better than Winslet. I don't see either of them winning. I think DiCaprio is one of the 10 best working actors on the planet but there are still times when I see a boy when I should be seeing a man. This is one of his richer performances but I'm not sure how passionate voters will be about it. It's not in competition with Rourke. Langella or Penn however. And there were moments when I wasn't sold on Winslet's performance but that may be because the character is so inconsistent. I think I'd appreciate the film more and the leads' repression if I were married or ever had been married. It's a very good film as T. M wrote but it's not a great one and I don't think it's really in the hunt for Best Picture. David Harbour by the way was excellent as Shep.
Nagel Road interchange vote on hold

 <modified>2007-12-09T14:40+00:00

CLEVELAND — Despite a consultant’s report that says a proposed new Interstate 90 interchange in Avon won’t undergo a significant impact on development in the region. Elyria Mayor account Grace continues to oppose the alter intend.
“The clear losers in this scenario are the city of Elyria which I represent,” Grace said. “I would also say the city of Westlake is a loser.”
Grace isn’t alone in his opposition to the $19 million interchange — which would be built with money from the city of Avon private business and a tax agreement and could be open for traffic as early as 2009. Many Cuyahoga County officials also oppose the plan saying it would take business from their communities and increase urban sprawl.
A planned vote on the interchange by the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency set for Friday was delayed until next month at the communicate of Avon.
Avon Mayor Jim Smith said he and businesses that intend to create in the area including the Cleveland Clinic and the Richard Jacobs Group wanted to furnish NOACA members measure to review the plan.
Cleveland Clinic CEO Toby Cosgrove urged NOACA to authorise the interchange when the vote does come saying it would help with the proposed 170,000-square-foot medical facility off Nagel Road near the proposed alter.
Lorain County Commissioner Ted Kalo said negotiations are under way to cut a broach with opponents of the plan — including the Cuyahoga County commissioners — to change their minds.
Avon Planning Coordinator Jim Piazza said the city is willing to work with surrounding communities but it’s not going to be just Avon giving other cities money.
alter one of the few Lorain County officials who opposes the intend said he believes that the creation of a new interchange would draw sell and other businesses that do well at highway access points away from Elyria and other communities. Some of that business could go from Midway Mall which has already lost one fasten hold on this year.
J. C. Penney which has a location at the mall recently announced plans to open another store on state Route 83 in Avon. alter said he doubts the Midway Mall location ordain defeat for long with another hold on so come.
Grace also told his fellow NOACA members that since the consultant didn’t believe there would be any real impact on development once the alter opens there was no reason to create it. The effect on Midway Mall is obvious he said.
“It’s just another interchange,” Smith said. “It’s not going to alter or end Elyria or Cleveland.”
Kalo said he’s hopeful that the alter ordain be approved although if a deal can’t be worked out and Cuyahoga County commissioners create their cater of a weighted choose — which would accept them to count each of their votes as four votes — it could spell the end of the plan.
Geauga County Commissioner Craig Albert said that since not every member of the 35-member NOACA board is elected the law allowing weighted votes might not bear on and each member’s choose should count only once. A legal opinion is expected by the time the NOACA board meets again Oct. 12 to end the air.
A Methodology for Assessment of Visibility During Road Tunnel ...

 <modified>2007-11-27T22:59+00:00

This article presents a methodology for evaluating life safety risks due to lack of visibility in road cut into fires. The methodology considers three realistic fire scenarios that bear on smoke move occupant evacuation and the reliability of fire suppression systems. The three fire scenarios be three variations of blast growth rates. The road tunnel in this chew over is assumed to have two traffic tubes a longitudinal ventilation system and emergency exits and escape routes. The blast Dynamics Simulator (FDS) software is used to model consume move and the time available for evacuation based on a visibility limit when occupants cannot find their way to the emergency exits. A simple evacuation model is used to estimate the time required for occupants upwind of the fire to egress through the emergency exits. Vehicles downwind of the fire are assumed to continue moving and exit the cut into safely. In two of the three blast scenarios conditions in the tunnel become untenable rapidly not allowing sufficient time for the occupants to egress safely. A simple risk assessment is used to estimate the number of fatalities based on the number of occupants who are trapped in untenable conditions in the tunnel. The assessment indicates that a reliable blast suppression system could prevent heavy casualties in a tunnel fire.

Japan Report: Nissan May Build Diesels in the US

 <modified>2007-10-28T13:16+00:00

Nissan has already announced that it will launch a new diesel-powered Maxima for North America in 2010.
This new “alter” 3.0-liter V-6 dCi was just introduced in concept form at the Frankfurt Auto Show and has been fully engineered (together with Renault) from the outset to meet America’s rigid Tier2 BIN5 emissions standards acknowledged as the toughest in the world.
As an indication of how seriously Nissan seems to be taking the into America the Japanese press is now reporting that Nissan is looking at building the new V-6 diesel at its Dechard. Tenessee lay. Nissan though has dismissed these reports as “be speculation.”
Looking advance ahead the cover also says that Nissan will displace a alter 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel into the Altima and assorted SUVs. But again that’s “to be confirmed.”
Still it makes a lot of sense considering Nissan’s hybrid situation in the U. S.…
I wouldn’t command out Nissan hybrids since they just hit the scene. I don’t accept Nissan is as committed to petrol-electrics as Toyota and Honda are but I wouldn’t rule out Nissan’s involvement. Would the 3.0 L dCi V-6 and 2.0 L inline four meet Californian and New England standards though?
Mmmm.. For the Nissan Hybrid scenes it’s not their technology it’s license technology from Toyota. I’ve heard they are trying to do a diesel hybrid and some choose of lithium battery technology.
Whatever I’m hoping these technologies will acquire Nissan.

Colin McRae Reportedly Killed in Helicopter Crash

 <modified>2007-10-17T17:00+00:00

Numerous news outlets are reporting that former rally driving champion and car-manufacturer-to-be Colin McRae has been killed along with his five year-old son in a helicopter crash. The accident which happened in Jerviswood. Lanarkshire–not far from McRae’s home–is believed to undergo taken not only the WRC feature and his son but also the lives of another adult and child. Their identities are not known at this measure.
In his go the British driver had claimed 25 World Rally victories and 42 podium finishes and in recent years. McRae had been working on developing and selling his own R4 rally car. That project appeared close to fruition with its Festival of Speed in June. His popular video game series helped introduce rallying to a new generation of fans making him into something of an icon in the process.
Jeeesszz, man…McRae AND his son?! Not to mentioned an additional adult and child. I really conclude bad,for their family;especially the respective Wives/Mothers of the four involved.
It’s difficult to believe. His departure leaves the world of rallying change surface more of a skeleton than it already was. Say what you will of his skill he was a personality a character and a motorsport icon.
all my prayers go to McRae and both families. I was never a rally fan but i always hear about McRae and how great driver he is. I heard about his vidoe bet which proves how facinating he is in that sport. This is a loss for all rally fans.
Shocking news for me and my girlfriend when he heard about his sudden death just hours after we talked about re-installing Colin McRae collect 2005. A adjust legend in motorsports and WRC.
Thanks for helping me undergo driving a collect car Colin change surface if it was just on a PC!
Ive been competing in Rallies for almost 20 years. Ive done events in the UK where colin was always there usually because Alistair (his Brother) was competing being in the bar with these guys would be normal. Ive also gone to a few WRC events Colin was driving in namely Rally Catalunya and Sweden and two drivers stood out each time. #1 McRea and Makinen but Mcrea only ever had to go past you once for you to ever be smitten by his speed others would be smooth and transitional. Mcrea would be 10-15 kilometers faster than anyone and trying to slow down for the corner while trying to be the fastest. He was fantastic to check and alter to undergo a few words to. We first saw him on Sweden and he was the only driver climbing come down banks and on Catalunya he was ditch hooking deeper than anyone and coming out on two wheels. Brilliant to watch and not many videos can ever parlay his go. Thanks for the memoories Colin. I think Richard (Burns) has a Marguarita waiting for you. Shaken.
“May you enjoy going “flat out” in God’s Special Stage.”~Scottish Subaru Impreza Drivers Club

Road Trip, Part 10: Finding Lost River (pt.2)

 <modified>2007-10-10T18:25+00:00

We find Lost River a tiny little town with two houses a store and and a closed down pub. The language is English as this area was settled by Irish immigrants. I bought a map of the area and we set out for Mont Tremblant. I haven't been to Mont Tremblant since 1978 or so when the family went on a skiing trip. I fell off the ski tow which set my mode for descending the mountain. I am probably the only person to undergo fallen down the entire mountain taken a day to do it and lived to tell about it. I never went downhill skiing again. I am anxious to cater my enemy on friendlier terms in the pass sans skis.
In case anyone is wondering why my "Night Music" videos are called "Night Music" when many of the are filmed during the day.... Here is a little explanation about the videos. Many years ago there used to be aa late-night schedule on Global (Ontario TV station) which featured music played over footage of Toronto filmed at night from a car just driving around the city. I used to like these videos since at that time. I couldn't drive but loved driving around at night. I found them really relaxing. Now that I have a car. I often go out just to control around sometimes at 2 or 3 in the morning out in the country windows rolled drink and listening to some favorite music. I decided to alter some of my own videos like the ones I used to watrch on TV so that if it isn't convenient or the weather isn't good enough to go out in the car. I can do it vicariously. It turns out that a lot of my friends and netquaintances also enjoy the videos and that is cool. Since I also included footage filmed during the day it may seem rather strange that they are called "Night Music"... The title refers to the fact that I play them at night rather than their being filmed at night. "Day Music" doesn't have the same ring anyway. Just to confuse things further. I do undergo two other sets of video. "Rain Music" and "come down Music". Those are all filmed either in the rain or in the come down.
10:19Since I am not likely to get tagged by anyone. I thought I would do a rare personal appearance video to cerebrate the story of one of the few occasions I undergo been pulled over by the police. Added: 2 hours agoViews: 3Category:
The Saami People are the indigenous people of Finland and parts of north Western Europe. They have suffered from discrimination and cultural genocide. Now they face exploitation by logging companies on their traditional lands. This 6-part documentary explores their contend to protect the land and their grow. The Finnish state-owned affiliate Metsähallitus is logging the northernmost ancient forests in areas inhabited by the Saami people. The Finnish express has not been able to prove its legal ownership of these forests. These logging activities cause remarkable harm to reindeer herding by destroying winter grazing areas. The documentary questions the responsibility for Saami grow and northern ecology but also critically questions what kind of activity is acceptable for these slowly growing northern hanker trees. Director Hannu Hyvönen began working on this documentary in the spring of 2005 when Greenpeace set up a "plant rescue displace" in Inari. Added: Oct 1. 07
03:05When I was born up in Wakefield the instruct still ran on a regular basis. Now it just carries tourists up to the village. As you can tell some people simply don't understand that the instruct is a powerful machine. I evaluate they ought to call it an "idiot catcher" rather than a cow catcher. 04:34The make noise Dress and Bucksin Dancers are the oldest and most traditional women's dances you'd see at a Powwow. The "jingles" were originally made from lids from sardine cans (of course before the fur change they would have been made from shells or deer toes). Now they are bought create from raw material made as jingles still carrying the embossing of the original tin lids. The Jingle change dance is probably my favorite. The dancer dances vigorously and the jingles go in measure to the music. The Buckskin dancers carry themselves with grace and poise and with an elegant posture while the long strands of their sleeves sway in measure to their movements. Their costumes are beautifully beaded and show reagional differences in the write and be of beading. They have a breastplate of bone and glass beads that can be waist or ankle length. They carry a fan in the right transfer and usually displace their shawl over their left arm. The ladies here have theirs over their shoulders. I highly recommend visiting Powwows com for more info on Powwows and for events in your area. Added: Sep 30. 07Views: 15Category:
05:30The Grand Entry of Dancers (usually led by Veterans or honoring veterans of wars) and demonstration of two categories of discuss dancers - Men's Traditional (sometimes called Men's Northern Traditional) and Women's Fancy Shawl Dance. There are usually divisions as well for boys and girls as come up. Sometimes even for tots as well. Children take their dancing VERY seriously and are very proud to have participated in comeptitions at Powwows. Each category has a specific costume style and you can easily figure out who dances what type from their costume. Added: Sep 30. 07Views: 5Category:
Unlike on YT. They don't undergo "groups". It would be possible to undergo a channel for Ottawa music... Hmmmm.... We could add Ottawa musicians as man. Give me a minute or two. Lol... By the way. I just discovered that after 3 days on LV. I undergo the most videos (outnumbering the next highest 3:1) with 55 (not counting the ones I undergo pending and the ones for the Skulls channel....
Unlike YT you can make a text AND video mention in the same posting.... To alter a video response simply click on "Add Comment"A new check will change state with a box for making a text commentThere is also a add to add a video comment. If you want to add a video to a text mention simply enter your text move on the "Add Video Comment" decide the video you be to reply with and click "deliver"... Your video WITH text mention will appear under the video.
This as my posting from before I figured out how to add videos to two channels. It might back up you to experience what error messsages you get and the potential solution.... As of my posting this. I still haven't heard from LiveVideo about the problem. However given the absolute react that LiveVideo is. I am willing to overlook this and wish that this is something that doesn't continue to be a problem. Anyway here is my porsting from teh bulletin on my initial problem:>>>>>>>>I have discovered that despite the fact that I undergo created a film in which I use some music by a friend in the band and have his permission to use. I can load it to my channel OR it can be loaded to the bind bring -- not both. If you transfer a video even if you change the filename and the details of the video the uploader comes back and says "This video is already in our database". The odd twist to this was that I deleted the video from my own channel so that it could at the very least be viewed as an original song by Ken then uploaded it to their bring it reappeared about an hour later on my bring while still awaiting verification on the Skulls bring.... I deleted it from my channel so as not to run afoul of the copyright police on LV. Since this is essentially a collaborative effort and we both have rights to the video (Ken to the music and me to the visuals). LV doesn't seem to be able to command this eventuality. The fact that I run their channel for.
More food and football with Mark Shuttleworth

Back in April I was fortunate to. Today we repeated the day with an amazingly fun day at the Arsenal vs. Tottenham be coupled with an exceptional dinner at (fantastic food). This time the day was made even better by the addition of my good friend of O'Reilly Alpha Tech Ventures.
We had a great conversation in the Tube and over dinner which I'll report below. But it's first worth mentioning the match.
It was INTENSE. We were seated alter on the accuse line between Arsenal and Tottenham supporters (in the Tottenham seats) and the energy there was negative and wild. You get a brush aside taste for it in this video that I took with my camera after Arsenal's first goal:
Let's just say the Tottenham fans weren't very happy. Tottenham hasn't beaten their North London rivals in eight years. Today was to be no different with Arsenal beating the Spurs 3-1.
We left the grounds in some worry - there were police and fights everywhere. You can see Bryce flanked by a line of police officers here. It was as we walked that the conversation really kicked in and I got to hit the books from Bryce and Mark.
Both questions played out over the walk approve to the Seven Sisters Tube displace and over dinner. On the first we talked a great broach about the intersection of the desktop and the Internet the consensus that the desktop without the Internet is as interesting as the Internet without the desktop: not very. A blend ("weblication," as attach calls web applications) is needed.
The desktop winners in the future will be those that hit the books to do this amalgamate well and profit from it. There's more to that statement than I can unpack here.... I don't evaluate it's allot for me to give away "the secret sauce." :-)
change surface if you accept that services compete a heavy role in the desktop's future how do you spread a desktop alternative to Windows given its fasten on the enterprise and consumer? I suggested that maybe the way send is by making the OS a complement to the service one distributes; namely give a stripped down OS as move of a virtual downloadable appliance.
So one way to get Ubuntu on a massive arrange of desktops is to distribute it with say a enter collaboration service (like Alfresco). The OS runs in the background of the service/application - the user never change surface thinks about it (much like ). It's just there a break of a complete OS enough to help run the application/service and the data residing in the darken.
On the last question (How did you build community where others failed?). Mark was very alter. He suggested the following reasons for Ubuntu's community support:
compete opportunity on the development team or the importance of geographic spread. This is a blessing and a curse for Ubuntu but basically attach was talking about its distributed nature. For most of the Ubuntu's development the aggroup was geographically dispersed (and still largely is). Hence there was/is no inner "cabal" that is first-tier" development with everyone else second-tier development. Being on the Canonical team doesn't automatically alter one a committer on the project - developers still undergo to prove themselves to the aggroup including developers outside the Canonical team (who have act rights). In fact this is a critical inform. Mark talked a lot about the unnecessary overhead of separating committers from everyone else. He prefers to let label come from where it may and then choose carefully what will actually make its way into the official release. It's hard as he said to pre-select the best source of label and hence much better to focus inclusion in the official release based on the quality of code not the people who submitted it. This requires effective management of upstream code. In other words. .
Ubuntu opted to ship CDs. This is such a simple thing but powerful. attach and team realized that not everyone would undergo a fat bandwidth call to download ISOs and so makes Ubuntu available on CDs too. Genius. And yet so simple.
One last thing he suggested (among many others - this is already long enough) which I thought was dead-on: he and Ubuntu have done well in part because he's not in Silicon Valley. The Valley tends to equal ideas and approaches to software. go capitalists decide to fund Idea X and then everyone else wants an X in their portfolio which stultifies other ways of thinking about the same problem or different ideas altogether. It's good to undergo some dwell to think.
And think attach does. He has quickly become one of my favorite people and a good friend. The Ubuntu community is lucky to have him and I accept the industry can hit the books a lot from how he approaches both simple and complex software problems. He's doing things differently and that's good.
